Looking for Beauty on a Dismal Day

Posted by Sharkey

As you may have heard, we’ve had quite a bit of snow here at the farm.  Yesterday, however, was quite a different story because it was raining all day on top of all that snow, making it just pain dismal.  Good thing we Frenchies, don’t need an excuse to curl up and take a nap.  On the bright side, Martha really likes flowering house plants, so take a look at this.

You're right, Sharkey. Who would want to go out there when it's so gray and uninviting?

It's pouring rain and there are ice-cold puddles everywhere to freeze our little feet.

And not a donkey in sight - they must feel the same way and are hanging out in the stable.

Francesca! Come and take a look at this! Dazzling color, at last!

Why Sharkey! These are beautiful amaryllis flowers, whose magnificent blooms really help to brighten up the long, dreary days of winter!

Franny, it's just such a surprise to see so many of them blooming at once.

I remember that their large, dazzling, trumpet-shaped blooms seem to last for weeks on end.

And look at the second flower shoot emerging from this energetic bulb! Good for us, this will be a really long display!

I feel like staying here to watch this bloom unfurl.

Wow, Sharkey! - Now that it's open, watch out for the pollen! You know how allergic you are.

I'm so happy that Martha likes to fill the house with brightness, aren't you, Frannie?

  • Hello Ladies,
Snow, snow and more snow in sight. I am not too fond of it, but my Mom loves it. I just go out and tend to business and in I come. Now G.K., Kirby Bear and Mrs. Bosley Chow Chow, I bet you all love to roll in the snow. If a fire isn't going to warm my paws, I lick my paws until they get warm again. You girls are right, the Amarylis are beautiful. My Mom's always seem to bloom around Easter instead of Christmas. We planted one in October this year and put it in our little greenhouse and blooms are just coming. Your Mom knows the right place to get them I guess to have them so beautiful. Can you ask Laura and Eliad to find out where they are from, so I can order some for Mom next year? Kirby Bear, I was just thinking that you and G.K. must look like the abomminable snowman when you get snow on the ends of your fur. Have a great Wednesday all.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
You two are so lucky with the rain; it could be freezing rain. It snowed about two inches of snow and then the next day it was freezing rain. It was about an inch on top of the snow. I could not even walk on the stuff. Daddy had to make a path to the mailbox. I don’t know why; the mail wasn’t running. It took a week for the mess to melt. It has been raining a little this past weekend and is still raining today. I’m beginning to think the blue sky isn’t coming back. But I have hope, tomorrow will be a better day. One question ladies, do those flowers come in anything except red?
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Just think of the snow on the way out and soon we will have Spring! we had a dump of snow two days ago, but it was warm with 34 degrees now turning to bitter cold...even Kitty doesn't want out and she has luxurious fur on her...what a feral cat...whimmpy this year is more like it! But rain and snow I don't like at all.

Love the amaryllis flowers, I have a small begonia in a bonsai pot, I didn't have the heart to leave it in the garden this year so brought it in, and to my surprise it's blooming with lovely flowers. I can't wait for my huge Clivia to bloom, I have had it since 1975.

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., I love it when you show us wonderful photos of the outside and the inside of Martha's beautiful farm. These photos of the amaryllis plants are absolutely stunning! I think I better talk my Mom into getting some to brighten our home. We have mostly green leafy plants and one pretty one with purple blossoms. We don't have any snow or rain today, thank goodness! We has 2 inches of snow one evening and then it rained the next day and melted all the snow away. A day with sunshine will be delightful! Hope you have a great day and enjoy those beautiful amaryllis! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hi girls, Our house is as snowed in as your house is. those flowers are pretty , my mom love flowers but my dad seems to love to mow them down! your friend Rocky

  • What a sight for sore eyes, thank you for the pretty colors Sharkey. You and Franny look cute standing in the doorway contemplating should you stay or should you go.

Is it hard to get GK to come inside from playing in the snow? I remember MommyMartha mentioning how dear Paw Paw loved the snow and it took a lot to get him to come inside.

  • Tough out there today girls! Hope your snow melts quickly. Maybe you need some booties in the meantime to go with your fleece coats. : )

  • Dear Martha,
Since apple tree wood,as do many other fruit and nut woods, impart their own unique and delicious flavor when burned I often use these woods when smoking food.
The basic wood for my smoking food is hickory but I do add any fruit wood like apple or cherry or both in moderate amounts if available.
My neighbors all enjoy the deliciously sweet aroma and can't wait for a sample .
When I am successful at surf fishing locally , here in south east Florida , I frequently smoke my catch and share with friends and neighbors.
