Operating the Cider Press

Posted by Francesca

Finally!  It was our turn to use the cider press and make apple cider.  Sharkey picked a lot of our favorite varieties of apples and Laura Acuna washed them well.  The cider press was ready and waiting and the whole process of cranking and pressing was so much fun.

Sharkey picked a lot of juicy apples so I guess it's time to get the cider press in motion.

It's amazing how effortless it is to turn this flywheel.

So what is actually going on in the grinder box?

and in no time at all, those apples are chopped up! Just don't put anything in there that you don't want chopped.

So, Pete. You seem like an old hand at this. Do I turn this wheel next?

I'll just lower the press screw and apply pressure on the chopped apples.

Look at all that cider, GK! Doesn't it smell great? It even matches the color of your fur.

And won't the chickens be so happy eating all those pressed apples?

Say, Princess Peony - do you want to help us make apple cider?

You've got to be kidding me! I mean, have you ever heard of a cat making cider before? Honestly, you crazy dogs!

  • Now that's what I call a real family affair. Francesca you looked like you were in full supervisor mode making sure everything was where it needed to be. Good to GK out there learning the ropes.

So sweet of the three of you to make sure the chickens get their portion of the apples. That's what's so cool about your Mom, nothing goes to waste. Keep an eye on those cats to sneak some sips of the cider when no one's looking.

  • Good Morning F & S

Is that cat a snob or what??? Who wants her to help anyway - tell her to go take a nap or something.

Great job on making the cider it looks yummy. You sure do grow lots of apples on that farm. We got 3 big boxes of apples delivered from my Aunt Cheryl who lives in Hood River Oregon yesterday. There was one apple called the Hanner's Jumbo and I swear it was bigger than my head! Mom loves the Tokyo Rose, Pink Pearl and Hidden Rose apples the best. They are pink inside and really good. We can't get those kinds of apples here so my Aunt Cheryl visits her friends who own the orchards and she ships them to us freshly picked.

Well my breakfast is being served mom has an early meeting so I must eat then go poop before she leaves ;)

    Have a great day!

  • Hello Ladies & G.K.,
Good to see G.K. is helping you girls with the cider press. He is getting sooo big I bet his strength was surely appreciated. That cider press looks so much fun and work too! Mom really got the cooking bug with her new kitchen yesterday. I hardly got a nap having to supervise so much. There were lots of good apple bites with the yummy applesauce being made, and than Applesauce Bread, Pecan Coffecake, Shortribs from your Mama Martha's show and Green Chili Stew. Now this morning she is getting ready to bake again. Good thing she is going out to lunch with a friend so I can get some rest. Keep up the good apple pressing.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Yeah, that’s right; who ever heard of a cat making cider. As far as that goes, who ever heard of dogs making cider. It shows that you three really have some talent for doing. My Mommy was raised on a farm and she saw the cider press every year. She turned it quite a few times in those days. It’s really more work than most folks want to do now days. Seems that all everyone wants to do is press a few buttons. As for me, I’m a hard worker. Excuse me while I take a nap which is past due.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Oh what I would give to have some of that cider!! I love fresh apple cider and all the mixes of apples look delicious...you Frenchie pups are amazing, the skills you have acquired at your mommies place and business is mind boggling...

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., Yeah, I knew you girls could work that great cider press and make your own winesap cider! Bet it was delicious! How nice that you had Laura Acuna and Pete there to help you! Did you sit on your stools? That cider press is a bit tall. Looks like the weather was good, too. It's very foggy here this morning, but is supposed to be warm and sunny this afternoon. Have another great day! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Figures the cat is always horning in, huh! :)

    Job well done girls.

Will you be bottling and selling it at a roadside stand??

    Love you both.
