Giggly Humans...

Posted by Pia

So it's that time of year when doting humans like to dress their furry family up in costumes. My friend Faye, whose firefighter husband saved the glue trapped gopher, has a special knack for 'costuming' her cast of rescued pooches.

What I find particularly impressive is Faye's ability to get her 4-leggers to sit like this for a photo!

5 "Although strangely, I can also be made to look like a skunk..."

6 "...or dressed up as a...ghost? am I a ghost now?! Is that the look we are going for Faye?"

Each year brings different costumes and often a different cast of characters! The lounging Princess Penny seems to be enjoying her first Halloween with the crew!

14 "I think the Spider get-up was more fitting than the pig one but I allowed Faye to have her fun with both!"

15 "At Christmas I like to be a tree..."

21 "A construction worker? What, are we the Village People this year? It's fun to stay at the W...O..O...F..."

22 "A pumpkin? A pumpkin? Why I gotta be the pumpkin this year? This gives me no room for creativity Faye...I need to be able to express myself..."

23 "I know you saved my life and all Faye but a bunny? A pit bull bunny? A bull- bunny? Oh, wait... I like the sound of that last one... I'm a bull-bunny!"

Emma had loved the hula skirt the year before!
Thankful Emma was adopted by Faye just before a breeder who had her was going to have her destroyed. Apparently beautiful Emma's tail curled up at the end which made her below standards to be able to show.

Like Emma, Hannah (Banana) was going to be destroyed before Faye took her in. She was said to be shy and depressed so no one believed she would get adopted. She looks pretty happy and perky as a banana! Yay Faye!

In fact, they each look pretty happy and thankful- they all agree that indulging mama Faye around the holidays is a small price to pay for a happy forever home!

Don't you agree present Petey?

Even the most serious among us can get all giggly over a get-up for Fido. That said, it is really only entertaining when the critter being costumed is consenting. Being a little annoyed for the sake of their human's indulgence is one thing- but, if your canine or feline is really objecting, I'd recommend giving yourself an A for effort and turning your attention to painting whiskers on your own face instead.

Dr. Pia Salk

  • So sweet, funny and adorable.

Please don't call such people breeders. Those of us who are breeders would never dream of doing something like that to one of our dogs. As a breeder involved in rescue, the idea that such a person is even allowed to own an animal is appalling - and to be compared to such a person is disappointing.

  • All I can say, How CUTE is that!!!
Yes, how did Faye get all those cuties to pose together at the same time.

Zoe, I'm happy T-Bone is doing well.

Dr. Pia and everyone, have a wonderful weekend!...we have great weather here.

  • Hello Dr. Pia & Ladies,
How fantastic everyone looks. We took a family portrait one fall with all my cousins against a pretty changing leaf background. Mom said it was not easy to get us all to stay and look forward for the portrait. I can't imagine how Faye got everyone to poise for all those portraits. She should be a special pet photographer for others. All the costumes look cool, but my favorites are the construction worker (that gives me an idea for next year) and hoola dancer and Christmas package. Thanks for sharing all the great photos Faye--you are the best for adopting also.

Mom got her November issue of Martha Stewart Living Magazine yesterday and we loved the dual cover especially with G.K. on the front. Are Franny and Sharkey going to be on the Christmas issue? I hope so!! Have a great day.

    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
And good day to you too Dr. Pia. What neat outfits in the pictures. I usually don’t like anything on me except my leash and then just when I take my walk. Daddy and Mommy have tried many hats, but I just shake them off. Now uncle Bear Bear just loved to dress up. I’ve seen pictures of him in his “camo” outfit. He’s hard to spot which shows the “camo” is doing a good job. Bear belonged to my “human” brother. He was not good to Bear and Mommy and Daddy took him away when they moved to GA. As you can see, all sorts of people can mistreat animals; not just the bad ones.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Leslie-
Thanks for writing. You are absolutely right that a responsible breeder would not do what was going to be done to Emma! And I always like to hear about the breeders involved in rescue- what a fitting way to show appreciation for a particular breed!
I apologize if I disappointed you- I do know that there are responsible breeders and irresponsible ones- just not sure what to call the latter ones as it was in fact a licensed breeder that had Emma initially.
Thank you for being a responsible one and for your involvement in rescue!
    Best,
    Pia

  • Dr Pia, I am also a breeder ,of Shih Tzu never would I put down an animal for not being perfect.I have a story I hope you'll pass along. In January I got back a puppy that had deveoped a heart murmur. It was a3/6 6 being the worst. 2 vets gave the pup nine month at most he also had the sniffles which no one paid much mind to being the heart was so bad. The sniffles got worse, I brought him back to the vet she gave him antibiotic and a shot for the heart to clear the lungs uncase that was the problem. The shot did not help ,the heart at that point was diagnosed as a 5/6. I did steam baths and any thing to clear the nose. Shih Tzu sometimes when teething get runny noses and the worst some have pinched nostrils or stenotic nares which cause breathing problems sometimes they open on there own sometimes a vet has to. By the time the pup was 8 months his nose open ed and the breathing problems went away. Yesterday I brought him to the vet for a check and he had no heart murmur. He will be a year next week. Breeders that put an animal down would never understand the joy I felt yesterday. Now my Little Graham Cracker will have a home with me forever.I am trying some different breeding methods, For one I use no cages , even with the babies. You would be so surprised to see how easy they train up when they never have to learn to sleep in pee! I also encourage my buyer to pick their puppy early then come visit and watch him grow. This gives me a connection with the people so they will feel comfortable to call if there a problem. The people get to meet all the family and see who their pup takes after and I get to teach them about the breed. This is all I've done in 9 years and I love every minute of it. Sincerely Terri Salerno

  • Hi Dr. Pia, This is such an adorable and giggly blog about Faye's fantastic rescued babies! These photos are absolutely outstanding and I can almost hear each of those sweethearts tell their story for these comments! My little DDR won't let me put a costume on his body probably because of how he was treated as a baby before I was so lucky to get him. Have a great day everybody and sure hope T-Bone is doing better today. Jan
