Another Hike at Jordan Pond

Posted by Sharkey

Franny and I noticed that Martha was posting a blog about one of our favorite hiking places in Maine – Jordan Pond.  We suddenly remembered that we, too, had another blog from Jordan Pond to share with you from the last time we were in Maine.

Well, I'm all ready to go out hiking, but I sure wish everyone else would put a move on it! It's hard to just sit here when the entire state of Maine is right outside the door!

Ahh! Finally! Out walking with my namesake, Kevin Sharkey. Or am I his namesake?

Francesca, isn't it great to be back hiking at beautiful Jordan Pond? I hope we'll encounter some exciting wildlife.

Well look over yonder, Sharkey! Do you see what I see?

It's a squirrel, but it's not gray like the ones in Bedford. Why do you think this one is red? Maybe it's a bad dye job.

No, Franny. It's actually called a 'red squirrel.' Did you know that red squirrels like to keep several nests, usually in tree hollows or subterranean tunnels? And that these critters hoard hundreds of pine cones in each location?

And even more interesting, those cute red squirrels are hunted by owls, hawks, and even FRENCHIES! Let's get him!!! Darn these leashes!!!

  • How do you two manage to restrain yourself when you are out and about with so many critters just begging to be chased? Chicago has tons of city squirrels downtown who hop right up to you staring at you expecting food. When that happens I think of what you two would do if you were here. Does GK like to chase squirrrels too or is that too dignified for a royal decendant of Paw Paw?

Have a great, weekend everyone!

  • Good Morning F & S

Oh if you only didn't have a leash on! What fun that would have been chasing those little suckers all around Maine. We get those big ugly gray squirrels and they make us dogs crazy. Jumping from tree to tree, running along the top of the fence and then they go hang from the bird feeders and eat all the seed!!

Last night we had a bit of a "stinky" night. We were all settled in bed, had our windows open enjoying the wonderful breezes and fresh air when all of the sudden skunk smell. Oh my gosh did that thing stink. All us dogs were inside so we knew none of us were going to get in trouble for chasing it so Dad went out and checked the property. No sign of skunk but it sure did leave its smell. We had to close our windows the smell was so bad. We were given orders no chasing the skunks.

So it's Friday and we're expecting a beautiful weekend. Sunday is the start of Mom's football season. They have a big tailgate party planned for the Eagles game. I wish she would take me to one of the parties. This week grilled filets are on the menu, I could go and just eat.

Have a great weekend everyone :)

  • Francesca & Sharkey, why do you waste time chasing squirrels, when there are hundreds of cats just waiting to be terrorized? C'mon, do your job! Bye!

  • Hello Ladies,
I have to be quick today as the men will be arriving soon to put the new kitchen contertops on and I have to be on guard to serve and protect. It looks like you girls have a marvelous time hiking. Now remember hiking is different than chasing. No squirrel fun. Did you get popovers at the end like Mama Martha? Hopefully this kitchen is on its way to being done and things can get back to being normal. We made salsa yesterday and canned it. That is one thing that is a bit hot for me. Looking forward to a relaxing weekend. Hope everyone has a good one.

    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Red squirrels? I thought that they only came in the gray. Well live and learn. Thanks for the lesson Sharkey. It’s the weekend and we all will be taking a day, or two, off to relax. I guess mommy and daddy will be spending time in front of the “tube” watching football. Tonight it will be Marshall and Saturday it will be the “dawgs” of Georgia. We have been working at changing the garage door; that’s a lot of work and we all need the rest. Have a good, and safe, weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Oh I love red squirrels, they remind me of Germany(the ears are pointed with fur tipping them)...ahhh you lucky Frenchies, always getting to see so much beauty.

well it's nice to hear the Wisconsin had something to do with the formation of Jordan Pond.

    Have a special weekend everyone!

  • Francesca & Sharkey,
After spending a week in Budapest, Hungary have discovered it's a Frenchie town. They love their dogs here in Budapest and we've seen more Frenchies than any other dog breed. Hope Martha gets a chance to visit Budapest In the near future to see all the Frenchies about town.
