"Ancient Chinese Secret"

Posted by Pia

Having furry kids is not always smooth sailing, but I guess that is what parenting is all about, really. My little Minnow whom you recently met has what seems to be some discomfort in her lower back and legs. Needless to say we have been to every specialist under the sun and Minnow has even started getting acupuncture! I'll let her tell you all about it....

But when I sit down to rest or go night night, my legs start twitching something fierce...right out from under me!

It's exhausting and makes it hard to get any rest! I whimper a lot when it happens, which makes my mom look sad and worried.

We've been to lots of vets. I just started seeing Dr. Annie at Animal Wellness Centers. She is nice, and I can tell she really wants me to feel better!

Dr. Annie leaves the needles in for I dunno how long... because I'm fast asleep when she comes back! My mom stays with me the whole time.

Then I get to go home and cuddle up to my siblings. I hope this pin thing makes my twitches go away. I like Dr. Annie, but the twitches are no fun.

Thank goodness for Dr. Annie Harvilicz. She clearly knows her craft and cares a great deal about her patients. She also cares about the environment and animal welfare overall; Annie donates much of her time to spay/neuter efforts and to help those who cannot afford to get proper veterinary care for their furry family. Minnow is very impressed by this and tells all of her friends about it!

Dr. Annie founded Animal Wellness Centers (AWC) after witnessing firsthand the dire need for health-care reform in veterinary medicine. Because of this, she developed the AWC integrated approach to animal wellness. I like that she is able to assess issues and treat symptoms by drawing on a number of perspectives.

Annie has worked with rhinos, pandas, elephants, other endangered species, and now my 3 lb 11 oz. Minnow  -- Thanks, Annie!

I'm sure Minnow will keep you all posted on her progress!

In kinship,
Dr. Pia Salk

  • Hi Dr. Pia & Minnow,
I have seen that needle stuff offered at my specialist's office and tried to think how they would do it on animals. My Mom goes and gets it done for her headaches. Minnow is very brave and I am glad she feels better when she gets it done. You are such a good Mom, Dr.Pia. Take care and see you next week.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hello Dr. Pia: Minnow, you are soooo very brave. You had your mommy with you the whole time. That makes all the difference in the world. She held you and loved you and made you feel comfortable. I know that my momma would do the same for me and so would my daddy. I hope those needles made you feel much better. My momma said she heard about this treatment for animals and it works too. If I ever need something like that, I know my momma and daddy would be with me the whole time too.

Yesterday, momma and daddy got back from the doctor and they took off some more skin cancers from near daddy's eye. His eye is swollen shut and all black and blue. He doesn't feel good so I'm going to be on my best behavior and while mommy is at work I will make sure no one bothers him and also make sure that he does not do very much of anything. He can watch TV. He cannot get his glasses on because of the bandages so he can't read his book. He said that was a real bummer because that is his favorite thing to do.

Well, it is time for me to get back to work for daddy. We also have a hurricane due in tonight (Earl). Momma said hopefully, it will pass quickly. Take care. See ya later. Love, Gracyn.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Hello Dr. Pia and Minnow. Chow Chows, like me, being from China know all about acupuncture. I haven’t had the need for any as of yet, but would consider it if I really needed it. I also know a couple other secrets but I will not tell because it is a secret and one should keep them. I guess by now you girls, and GK, are getting ready for the “big blow” which is heading your way. Just hope the winds don’t blow down any trees at your farm. I have my paws together for your safety.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Dr. Pia,
I'm so sorry Minnow has this problem and pray that all the treatment help make it go away...it hurts to see your loved pet in pain...

Right now my heart is heavy because my most precious feral cat named Kitty is not well...the Vet has nothing but bad news yet no proof of anything, tests would only confirm the problem but all are fatal. I can't bring myself to put Kitty through the painful testings...Just maybe the symptoms are a mimic of something else.

I can barely write this because my heart is in such pain...

So all I can do is pray for both of our dear pets.

  • Minnow, you really are the cutest little thing and very brave too. You can tell your Mommy Dr. Pia really loves you a lot. I'm so happy you finally have such a loving home.

@Gracyn Erwin, I hope you're Daddy feels much better and I just know you will be a good little doggie Dr. for him.

@Delia I am so sorry to hear the sad news about Kitty. My warm thoughts and prayers go out to you and her. I know you will do the best for your precious girl.

I hope everyone along the coasts stays safe with the hurricane approaching.

  • Hi Dr. Pia, Little Minnow is such a beautiful little girl. I sure hope she is feeling better real soon. Also hope Delia's little Kitty is getting better. About a month ago, my sweet, little DDR also had a back problem. He couldn't do the usual things he did like jumping on his favorite chair for a nap. I took him to the vet and he was checked thoroughly, given a pain shot on his back and some muscle relaxer. After giving him his meds for 3 to 4 days, he was back to his usual active self again. I had the vet check him out a week later and he is fine now-thank God. My prayers are with you and Delia and your wonderful pets. Jan

  • Hi I have had this problem with the smallest shih tzu puppies that I Breed I normally breed for standard size but every now and then I get a small one that has trouble using their back legs, as soon as I notice it I put them on a low protein diet and give smaller feedings more often.I also sing the put one foot in front of the other song and soon their walking down the stairs! I would suggest starting with no more than 10% protein a day. The results are truly amazing.

  • Dr. Pia the condition that Minnow could possibly have is liver shunts. When she was with her abusers they most likely fed her cheap food . In doing so the condition isn't as evident, being that low protein is all they can tolerate. Now that you have her ,you may be feeding her better food with more protein. It takes a bit to build up in the liver depending on the type of shunts. There are some very good diets that are low protein.Since she was pregnant she was also eating more. The American Shih Tzu club has much better info than I can give .Please check it out.Hope this helps.
