The Vegetables of my Labor

Posted by Ghenghis Khan

You may recall when I blogged about tending to the vegetable garden. Well, let me tell you that all of my hard work has definitely paid off. The vegetables are great this season and Martha is so, so happy with all of my efforts.

This red leaf lettuce is called Merlot Batavian. It's spectacular in a tossed salad.

All of Martha's tomatoes look great this year, including this wrinkly heirloom variety from Seed Savers Exchange. http://www.seedsavers.org/Items.aspx?search=tomato&image2.x=0&image2.y=0

This pretty cabbage is called Super Red. It still needs more time to mature into a nice round head.

It smells kind of grassy and fresh.

Maybe I'll just munch on it a bit.

This Peter Pan summer squash has beautiful squash blossoms. Maybe I should pick some and stuff them with herbed goat cheese for Martha. She would like that.

Ahh! Sweet Biscayne peppers! Some peppers....some Italian sausage....what could be better?

Look at this Winterbor kale. You know, kale is a very under-rated vegetable. Sauteed, it is delicious and it's full of vitamins A and C, folic acid, calcium, and iron. Eating it should be a no-brainer!

  • Well G.K. you sure did turn out to be the little farmer, nice crop you have growing there. You should pick those squash blossoms they are yummy. My mom stuffs them with cheese, rolls them in flour and bread crumbs and in to the frying pan with some oil. Add a little salt and you have a great little snack :)

Thank God the heat wave is gone it sure was hot this weekend. I stayed in the a/c most of the weekend while my crazy mother played golf. I'm looking forward to spending some time in the yard today I have to inspect the gardens. We had some heavy rain last night so I'll be helping dad with the clean-up.

    Have a nice day!!

  • You did a great job on the garden. I am sure Martha will be very pleased. As a matter of fact, now might be the time to ask for more biscuits for you and Franchesca and Sharkey. You have all been working very hard this summer.

  • Hello Ladies & G.K.,
Your garden looks like you are tending it very well G.K. The girls' efforts are not wasted in teaching you the ways of the farm and gardening. Much is getting ready to pick in our garden and alot we have been eating. Love those fresh green beans and Mom says soon we will be canning dill pickles. G.K., are you going to help Mama Martha and the girls can veggies and fruit this year.

Also, is someone sleeping in The Daily Wag office? I had to wait 3 days to read Friday's posts. Whoever used to do things was on top of their job, but now I rarely get to read anyone's post until 24 hours later. What is up with this? Girls and G.K. you need to tell Mama Martha about things not running as smooth at The Daily Wag. I know your Mom, and heads will roll.

    Keep cool everyone.

    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hey G.K., your tongue is the same color of the Super Red cabbage! gosh does mommie Martha really eat all that in one year? sure would be nice to have all those fabulous fresh veggies every day, grown in such a healthy way...lucky MS household...

  • G.K., you've learned a lot in a very short time at Martha's farm! You're also a great looking guy (we guys need to stick together these days). I wish you could come over and cook a nice vegetable medley for us! I'll fix some of my rarified pooched eggs as an accompaniment. What do you think?

  • Hi G.K., Thanks for sharing these photos of Martha's garden that you worked so hard in! I'm sure she was very proud of all of the work you did and so was Shaun!! My Mom feeds me lots of delicious vegetables and I help her with her gardening, also. Did you make those delicious things for Martha?! I'll bet she loved them, if you did! Stay cool and say hi to F&S for me. Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Old McGK had a farm e-i-e-i-o! You certainly have been a busy boy this summer tending the farm, shooting commercials and webisodes. I would be very honored to eat from your garden GK. Franny & Sharkey have certainly done a great job teaching you the ways of the farm. Mommy Martha must be so proud.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
GK you really do have a good garden and you know so much about plants. I don’t eat many vegetables but do get some in my dog food. I can’t grow vegetables down here; the bugs eat them up really fast. Spraying is out of the question even if it does keep the bugs away. Well it’s Monday already and it’s going to be another hot day. It’s been over 100 the past three days. They say it will be even hotter by the end of the week. Come on fall; I can’t wait!
    Catch you later, Kirby.

PS Was having troubble with net yesterday so this post is late.

  • well, GK, you look quite a bit like my chow chow! she helps in the garden, too, and often likes to take some time and smell the flowers. and nibble on my leaves. her favorite is basil!
