Heat Wave

Posted by Francesca

Everyone has been complaining about how hot and humid it is.  In fact, it’s being called a heat wave.  As you know, Sharkey and I love being outdoors, but these excessive temperatures make it really unpleasant for furry creatures – even in the shade!

Sharkey, it's really a heat wave! This sun is just too much for us heat sensitive Frenchies!!

Franny, I completely agree with you for once! In fact, never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, a parked car can become a furnace in no time - even with the windows open - which could lead to fatal heat stroke!

Must... SLURRRP... drink... SLURRRP... lots of water to stay cool! Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water when it's hot outdoors.

Francesca, I want to enjoy this view but I think the sun is actually cooking me! I certainly don't want to become what they call a sizzling hot dog!!

Sharkey, I have a good plan so that you can enjoy that view. Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun.

There now, this is much better sitting in the shade.

But, it's still hot in the shade! Be careful to not over-exercise your pets, and keep them indoors when it's extremely hot. Martha - please let us in!

  • You poor little darlings! heat is so hard on pets...good thing you can go into mommie Martha's house and cool down...oh boy Francesca that little fan doesn't look like it's even on, I had a good laugh at that little fan...

  • Hi Girl Friends, Well, if you girls can talk Martha into traveling again after she gets back from Florida, maybe you could come out here where I live because it's only 68 degrees right now here in the Puget Sound area and it might be cool in the 70's all week. How is G.K. handling your heat wave? Bet he would enjoy our cooler weather, also. In the mean time, stay inside and cool. Continue to drink lots of cool water. Love you all, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello again Francesca and Sharkey: Yes! It is true. Us pups and all other pets cannot take this kind of heat. I love to play in my yard but it is much too hot and then I don't have fun if its sooooo hot. Momma and Daddy always make sure it is cool in the house and that I have plenty of fresh cold water.

Momma said it has been up in the 90's and will not get lower for some time. She said that with the humidity it feels over 100 and never leave your pets in the car, not ever.

Story about baby bunnies - Uncle George, my friend who mows our lawn said that he wanted to show my daddy something in my fenced-in backyard. He said when he was mowing, he saw a clump of fur near the pine tree in the shade. The air blowing out of the mower blew the fur covering off some baby bunnies. One of the babies got hold of the fur and pulled it back over so as to cover all of them back up. Isn't that just the coolest thing? He wanted daddy to know so that I wouldn't bother the babies. I wouldn't hurt them but I would sniff them. Uncle George said it might scare their parents. Momma said she has seen the parents in our back yard. Oh well, it is much too hot for me to be out there. I will wait until they move on. I wouldn't want to scare them.

Time for my dinner. Take care. See ya later. Love Gracyn, and don't forget to drink, drink, drink your water!

  • Dear Sharkey and Francesca we have the opposite problem down here in Australia at the moment. It is the coldest winter here in Adelaide Australia in years. However I wouldnt know as this is my first and I am finding that my #1 goal of the day is to stay warm & cosy. I found the perfect spot take a look at me in this photo (my mummy entered me in a pet food contest with this photo)If you have a chance please send me your vote. http://www.whiskas.com.au/CatProfile.aspx?id=53920
This is what I call my "Cat Palace" the kids think it is there dollhouse but no way. It is 3 storeys high with a comfy bed and is in the room with the heater.

Hope you get some of our cool air soon. How about sending down some of your heat....but not too much!

Keep up your fantastic blog its great to read with a mug of warm milk.

Lots of meows from Abby & my typist Caroline

  • Good Morning F & S

Glad to see you took cover under the umbrella it's not good for us Frenchies to be out very long in this heat. I have a few spray bottles stationed around the deck and yard that mom keeps filled with cold water. I like to stay outside when she is out there so she keeps spraying me and it feels really good. Sometimes I'll even take a dip in the pool with mom but when it gets too hot I come in and find the air vents on the tiled kitchen floor and just park my butt right over the vent - it's like heaven.

Yesterday I sent in a comment that wasn't displayed because I voiced my opinion on Martha's dog clothing line at PetSmart. I'm sorry that you didn't like what I said but I was only telling the truth. I, Zoe, was disappointed but maybe there are dogs out there that would like a skeleton shirt or bathrobe. I was just expecting more bling. Maybe there are more coats and sweaters in production and I spoke too soon.

Keep cool everyone it looks like this heat wave is here for a while.

    Zoe

  • Hello Ladies,
You girls are so beauuuuutiful, even in the heat. I try to accompany Tasha on her daily sunbathing, but can only last for a bit. It makes her feel good. The heat just makes me feel hot and icky. Another week or so and we will be picking veggies from the garden. I love those cucumbers and tomatoes. We might get a bit of rain this week. Yesterday had some already. That is great!!!! Everyone stay cool and have a great Tuesday.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I’m like you two, I try to stay indoors as much as I can when it’s hot outside. I have very thick fur which helps to keep the heat away from my body but that doesn’t help much when it’s above 90 degrees. I go for my walk in the mornings when it’s cooler; was only in the 80’s this morning. Boy was I glad to get back home in the AC and have a big drink of cool water. My water is right next to one of the low level AC vents and that keeps my water cool. Parents are really smart sometimes, but not often if you know what I’m talking about. Well It’s time for my morning nap before helping daddy with his work he’s going to do today.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Martha & dogs!,
living in the Ca. Bay Area it is Hot(90's-100's)
My little Bridgett (half Frenchie/Boston) just doe's NOT know when to quit on the exercising or running around. She would run after a ball until literally passing out if we didn't stop throwing it for her . She doesn't seem to get the exhausted need to stop and rest thing at all. As a good dog parent we always have to take the upper hand with this, as we have had other flat-faced breeds (boxers) in the past. we only let her play for short periods of time and then rest and be indoors with the air and fan on. I'm not sure if the hyperactivity is common with the Bostons ( from what I hear and see at Dog shows I say Yes) but often wonder if she will grow out of this. It's funny she will seem to actually get upset with us and repeatedly get her ball and drop it in front of us and yodel/cry for us to keep throwing the ball, then get this terribly depressed look on her face when we don't. It really is pathetic to see & she knows it makes us feel bad.She is only 2 and we love her dearly I just worry about her constant need to run and exercise...if she were a person we would say she was obsessed, or be a triathlete/marathon runner. just wondering what you think. she is constantly walked, played with, and loved, I only work 4 hours a day and she is spoiled rotten,. what do think?

  • Awww Franny and Sharkey those first two photos of you make you look like your melting away. I know that Mommy Martha and everyone else at the farm make sure that you two aren't out in the sauna too long.

How's GK handling the heat? I bet with all that fur he's inside except early in the mornings.

Glad to see that you're doing OK Basil and that you're back to keeping Tasha in good company.
