Fly Predators to the Rescue!

Posted by Sharkey

Franny and I were wondering why the horses and the donkeys were wearing masks when they were outdoors.  We went to ask Betsy and she gave us a lesson in Fly Predators.  It turns out that Fly Predators are the good guys who work to get rid of the bad pest flies.  It’s really an amazing process of insect control!

Franny, have you noticed that the horses and the donkeys are wearing those strange masks again? Let's go find out from Betsy what's going on.

So Betsy - what's with those masks?

It's because of all the pest flies and you have something that can help?

I've never heard of fly predators before. What are they?

You mean that inside this sealed pouch are immature pupa stage predator bugs nestled among wood shavings?

And that the female predator deposits her eggs in the immature pupa stage of pest flies, killing them? WOW!!!

It's says that this bag contains 10,000 Fly Predators. That's fantastic!

It looks like those black things are moving. Maybe it's time for their release.

We'll follow you, Betsy. Show us how it's done.

So the first thing you do is look for donkey poop because that's where pest flies lay their eggs?

And then you just sprinkle on some of those predators? I see some pest flies on this poop, so I guess no new flies will be hatching here.

Betsy - I'll sprinkle the next mound. This is fun and we're helping our friends.

Franny, let's go and tell Clive, Rufus, and Billy the good news!

  • Welcome back from vacation girls!! I hope you were able to relax and enjoy your time off.

What a way to start a Monday than with bugs and poop. Hunting for donkey turds does not sound like a way I want to spend my day. However if it is going to help Clive, Rufus and Billy it's worth the effort. Those masks scared me reminded me of Silence of the Lambs.

My mom said when she was young she had a white German Shepard and in the summer the flies would attack her ears. Her name was Lady and she would have to wear medication on the rims of her ears to keep the bugs off. I'm glad us Frenchies don't have issues with those nasty bugs.

So girls nothing exciting going on down here in South Jersey to report except for this darn heat. This weather sure does have me confused one minute it's sunny the next thing you know the sky opens up and hail and heavy rain are coming down then the sun is back out. And let me tell you that hail hurts!!! Mom is all pissed off because the heavy rain is causing damage to her vegetable garden. This weather is crazy.

So I see on Martha's blog the interns are learning how to glitter. Why don't you girls invite some interns to help you with your blog and projects around the farm. You know a few of us at the Daily Wag would love to come work with F & S :) I'd even hunt for donkey turds.

Well have a great day and I'm glad you're back.

  • Hello Ladies,
I must say it is good to have you girls back from your vacation. You look very energized and helping lots around the farm. This is very interesting to me to learn about predator flies. I have never heard of such a thing. The people behind us have horses, so I hope they read your blog. Mom and I sure did enjoy your Mom's pet shows last week on t.v. I put one of those new dog dishes on my list for sure.

I am feeling great and taking good care of Tasha. She only eats poached chicken, hard boiled eggs and bread. She enjoys her sunbaths and having me close by. We are enjoying every minute of every day we have with her. I start to cry just thinking of what is up ahead soon, so I must sign off.

Good to know we are all back together again. Stay cool!!!!

    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
It’s so nice of you two helping the donkeys and horses by killing off those pest called fly’s. But you will have to remember that the donkeys have done their part by leaving the, let me say, waste product that the fly’s lay their eggs in. My only question would be, what do the “fly predators” eat? You explained what they do when laying their eggs, but not what they eat. I hope it isn’t Martha’s flowers.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Welcome back Francesca and Sharkey: What did you two do on your vacation anyways??? It was good of you to help with getting rid of pesky bugs. Daddy and I hate the month of May cause the biting flies start up and they bite him, momma and they try and get me, but I am too fast for them. Now it is time for mosquitos. Momma gets big old welts wherever they bit her. UGH!!

Basil - Good to see that you are feeling fine these days.

It rained all weekend and thundered like crazy! I didn't like it at all. Daddy would take me out cause I had to pee, but then it would thunder and I got scared and wouldn't pee. He would bring me back into the house for a while. All that noise from the sky makes me shake all over.

Well, it's time for a nap. Too hot and humid today. Momma said the whole country is like that. Not a cool place to be found if you are outside. Take care and drink plenty of cold water. See ya later. Love, Gracyn.

  • Missed you both! Glad you are back.

I thought the horses were playing "Pin the Tail" on the Donkeys by wearing those masks.

    gail :)

  • Ahhh, poor Rufus having to wear one of those HOT fly-masks...maybe this poop Fly Predator will kill off the flies and no more hot fly-masks...I never heard of this Fly Predators, seems like something good(hopefully it doesn't turn out like the Japanese Lady Bugs)
Good to see you two sweet pups back!

  • Hi Girl Friends, Welcome back. Hope you had a great vacation. The photos that Martha showed us show that you were having a good time. Did G.K go with you on vacation? You girls sure are heroes because you helped Betsy find the donkey poop so that she could put the fly predator stuff on it to kill the flys. Now maybe the donkeys won't have to wear those masks all summer. Say hi to G.K. Love, Dudley Do Right XXOXOXO+
