Bocce, in one form or another, is one of the world’s most popular ball games. Its popularity is nothing new: Roman soldiers played it, probably with round stones, while they waited to fight the Punic Wars. In 1388, England’s Richard II actually outlawed bocce because he worried that his subjects were spending too little time defending their country and too much time playing the game. He had a point, because bocce is quite a lot of fun and rather addictive. I like to challenge Sharkey to a game now and then. Of course, we modify the rules a bit.
