What's Going on in the Tomato Patch?

Posted by Sharkey

Franny and I trotted down to the vegetable garden the other day to see how things were growing. The weather has been getting milder and I suppose the danger of frost has passed. We found Shaun and Wilmer out there planting all the tomatoes they grew from seed and of course, Franny and I jumped right in to help.

Oh boy! It's that time of year again - time to plant the tomato seedlings.

Hey Shaun and Wilmer! Did you know that the tomato is native to western South America and Central America? In 1519, the Spanish discovered tomatoes growing in Montezuma's very own gardens!

Also, tomato in Latin translates to 'wolfpeach' - peach because it was round and luscious and wolf because they thought it was poisonous!

Well Sharkey, we Frenchies refer to the tomato as pommes d'amour, or love apples, as they are thought to have stimulating aphrodisiacal properties! Don't give any to G.K!

Now, I'll mix some compost in to give the tomatoes a boost of nutrients and to aerate the soil.

The tomatoes we're planting have stripes - can't you tell by the name?

You want to be sure to plant tomatoes deeply to encourage better root formation.

  • Good Morning F & S

Don't you just love helping in the garden it's one of my favorite things to do with mom. I'm not allowed in the vegetable garden now because I eat the lettuce leaves and step on the small plants. I can't seem to stay in the isle I prefer to walk on the plants :) I must ask why use a tool when you get dig a perfect hole with your paws?

Speaking of holes Sophie dug a big hole in the yard this morning. Mom was out there in the rain filling it in. She was digging by the fence I think trying to catch a critter in the woods on the other side. Mom had to find some dog poop to put in the hole then fill it in. Did you know that if a dog digs a hole and you put a dog poop in the hole they won't dig there again? It works, the Labs love to dig so we bury lots of turds. I find the entire digging holes thing over rated, hate to get my nails dirty and it means having to get my paws washed - not worth it.

Well time for breakfast - enjoy your day.

** Check out my entry in the dog contest I had to wear a stupid red, white and blue necklace.

  • Franny and Sharkey shouldn't you plant those tomatoes in a friut garden since they are fruit??
Either way, it looks like you could feed an Army with all those plantings...and such a variety...yumm I love tomatoes.
    Good girls helping Wilmer again.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Out in the garden again I see. I still think that farms are a lot of work but I still would be willing to do the work just to be on a farm. I see lots of farms in my travels. The best thing I like about the farms is; animals. So many of them it’s hard to count them. I only have so many toes you know. At least that’s what daddy says. I think he’s being silly. I can count higher than the number of my toes when I throw in my teeth and ears. Daddy says I should put in an “LOL” here; whatever that means. Well it’s going to be hot today now that the little rain has passed.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • That is so cute - thanks for sharing - AGAIN!! I just love coming here and to Martha's blog every morning!

  • You guys are such good helpers I'm sure Wilmer appreciated all your help today. I myself don't do gardening! What is Martha going to do with all those tomato's I hope she shares them with all the helpers that make it all happen on this beautiful farm of hers.

  • You and Francesca are such good little helpers. Thank you for the tomato growing tips as well. You'll have to keep us posted on the their progress.

I see that Mommy M is now in Malaysia. You girls have a very important job to do in addition to watching over the farm and that's keeping your baby brother GK safe while Mommy M is away. I know you two will do your best but I'm sure the not-so-little-anymore tyke will keep you on your paws.

  • Hi Girl Friends, Isn't it fun to help all of the crew who work there at Martha's fantastic farm?! You do such a great job and I am so proud of both of you!! I've been helping my Mom get things ready to repot her tomatoes and plant more of her garden vegetables. Today we repotted a 3 foot tall Early Girl tomato plant that we got at Costco yesterday and it was quite a job, but we did it! Then we had to cover it to protect it from the winterlike rain and wind storms that started this afternoon. Thank goodness we got the job done! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Thought I was going to die laughing when I saw you adding compost.
