What's Going on in the Tomato Patch?
Posted by Sharkey
Franny and I trotted down to the vegetable garden the other day to see how things were growing. The weather has been getting milder and I suppose the danger of frost has passed. We found Shaun and Wilmer out there planting all the tomatoes they grew from seed and of course, Franny and I jumped right in to help.
Oh boy! It's that time of year again - time to plant the tomato seedlings.
Hey Shaun and Wilmer! Did you know that the tomato is native to western South America and Central America? In 1519, the Spanish discovered tomatoes growing in Montezuma's very own gardens!
Also, tomato in Latin translates to 'wolfpeach' - peach because it was round and luscious and wolf because they thought it was poisonous!
Well Sharkey, we Frenchies refer to the tomato as pommes d'amour, or love apples, as they are thought to have stimulating aphrodisiacal properties! Don't give any to G.K!
I think the guys are tired, let's finish the job for them.
Francesca, lend a paw - I need some more leverage!
See? We dig well together!
Now, I'll mix some compost in to give the tomatoes a boost of nutrients and to aerate the soil.
Ok! Francesca, pass the seedling please!
The tomatoes we're planting have stripes - can't you tell by the name?
You want to be sure to plant tomatoes deeply to encourage better root formation.
There! A perfectly planted tomato!
Wilmer - chill, dude! Franny and I will plant the rest for you!
Another job well done!
