Pardon Me, Is That Lap Free?

The blog post I did regarding pit bull dogs was so well received by my readers that I thought it'd be fun to do a pittie photo gallery with quotes specific to this misunderstood and too often misrepresented breed.

I have really enjoyed hearing from others about their love for pit bulls or about the special pittie that changed their perception of these larger than life lap dogs!

Sadly, the lack of spaying and neutering and the misguided fear generated by misinformed media reports has resulted in shelters and rescues being full of these lovable pooches.

If you are inclined to open your heart to adopt one, try one out as a foster or volunteer at a local pit bull rescue,  I can pretty much guarantee you won't regret it!

If there is anything I can say about these big babies is that they are well able to convert the skeptical with their happy grins and loyal nature.  Even ones who have been through the worst treatment imaginable are typically lovers at heart and could give any human a lesson in gratitude, forgiveness and resilience.

In kinship,

Dr. Pia Salk

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I awoke this morning to the sound of the garbage truck. I don’t know why they run so early in the mornings. Daddy said that they do that while it’s cooler. I guess they must take naps in the afternoon while it is hot. I hope they have air conditioning to stay cool. Anyway, now that I’m up, may as well have breakfast. You have a nice day.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Ladies & Dr. Pia,
Dr. Pia you are sure correct in saying you can't judge a book by it's cover. I am soooo handsome and yet some people continue to judge my looks because they are different from other dogs. Wrongo!!! Everyone deserves a chance, and thanks again Dr. Pia for helping so many of our friends and cousins. Have a great day.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hey Tallulah here can't agree--misguided fear it's not your big babies with the happy grin and loyal nature can turn on a DIME. I know because one of your "big babies" ripped my "little sister" to SHREDS. Lap dogs they're not I would not leave the child in the photo with the pit for a nano-second! tell it like it is very few are lovers of heart so amigo Francesca & Sharkey be very careful when you are around "Pittie's"

  • Interesting topic and as I can see debatable...I believe because of the misguided facts and feelings towards Pits it should be "mandatory" to neuter, unless in a "registered & knowledgeable" breeders hands. Let's face it the majority of people that own these dogs own them for the wrong reason, so it perpetuates the problem.
We have Pits in my husbands side of the family, I get along with the dogs, but most of the family fear them and this sets the dogs off. How sad that humans have caused this breed to be this way...maybe someday it will be breed out of the Pit-Bull.

  • Hi Dr. Pia, Thank you so much for another wonderful and important blog. I wish with all my heart that more people would recognize that all dogs behave very well if they are treated well and respected by those who care about them. These photos of the adorable pit bulls are so wonderful to see. Hopefully all of them will be adopted by extremely caring people. Jan

  • Pit bulls are great, devoted and loving dogs and can really shine in the care of responsible people who truly want to see them do so. They really want to please their people -- when they want to see them shine and thrive, and not use them for (a laundry list of) the wrong reasons, they will.

Lambchop was 1/2 pit, half beagle and an amazing boy whose life I had the honor of being a part of!

  • My daughter and her husband have a pet pitbull-she heard from a show called PIT BOSS-PITBULLS WERE NO LONGER ALLOWED ON MILITARY BASES-they were being removed from families and they are very concerned and could use any information anyone might have reguarding if this is true!!!!
