The Chicken Show

Posted by Sharkey

Franny was still taking a nap when I got up from mine and felt like reading.  I noticed a stack of new books in the kitchen.  Much to my surprise, they were all about chickens and other types of poultry.  These books were quite eye opening and I have a whole new appreciation for these feathered creatures.

What's this? A new book called Extra Extraordinary Chickens by Stephen Green-Armytage. It's about the amazingly bizarre and beautiful world of show chickens.

I've heard of show dogs before and even show cats - but, show chickens? You've got to be kidding!

Can you believe the comb on this rooster? It says he is a Minorca. Rooster combs are so varied.

These two are Ornamental Bantams. I'm pretty sure that Martha has chickens just like these.

It smells like rubber and has a zipper and two handles. It must be a chicken hand bag.

And look - there are even more books about poultry!

They actually name their chickens at Little Pond Farm.

Do you think we should give all of our hens names, too? That would be a lot of names!

Wait a second - Didn't I hear something about Martha's show being all about chickens today? Franny, wake up! We've got to watch Martha!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I’ll be sure to “catch” the Chicken Show today. Nest to “piggy,” chickens are my favorite. What’s that daddy? Oh, you don’t mean for eating; you mean as pets. My mistake. I saw the man talking about the bears on The Martha Show the other day. Daddy and I have first hand experience with bears. We have found out that if you leave them alone, they will leave you alone too. What’s that daddy? squirrel on the back porch. Got’ta run. Have a good weekend.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Sharkey you are such a cutie :) I love chickens, to eat that is.

Today we are going to color our Easter Eggs. I'll get to sit at the table and watch. I'm so excited about Easter, lots of family, egg hunt and really good food. I'll make sure I follow the little one Nicole around she drops things and I clean up. Mom brought in the hams yesterday and boy do they look yummy.

Well yesterday I had to get a bath - AGAIN. The landscapers were at our house and I decided to roll in the large pile of mulch and top soil mom was PISSED. I just got groomed last week so back in the tub I went. The good thing was that I didn't have to get my nails cut the bath was bad enough. I'll think twice before I do that again.

I think there is a nap out in the sun in my future this afternoon. The pool is open, the lounge chairs are out and there is one with my name on it. I love to lay in the warm sun on a comfy chase - just heaven :)

    F & S, G.K., Martha and all my blogger bud's I wish you all a Blessed Easter.

  • Hello Ladies & G.K.,
We'll be watching that chicken show today. Martha sure does show their pretty colored eggs on her show quite often. You wouldn't even have to color all their eggs. Mom and I are going to do the egg coloring today. She says with old silk ties. I have to see this one to believe it. Everyone, you have a great Easter---all that good food--YUM!!!!
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Sharkey those books of Chickens are awesome! and to think of the variety! bet mommie Martha has a few differnt breeds...

Happy Easter to Martha and her gang, and of course all the critters living in that splendid paradise that MS has to offer.

hope this goes through the spam filter again...

  • It's funny that Martha was talking about chickens on her show today because my family is thinking about getting chickens!

  • What no poetry about chickens? Photo #5 looks like you're in deep thought about that Sharkey.

Could you do me a big favor Sharkey? Could you ask Mommy Martha to please upgrade the video player on the website so that it can be made full screen and allow the show to buffer? The website is the only way that many people get to watch the show these days and it can be very hard to do with the small screen and buffering issues. I just know that you, Franny & GK will have more pull with Mommy M!

Kirby Bear, good to see that you are OK from the over scratching that you did the other day.

Everyone, have a wonderful and beautiful Easter weekend!

  • Hi Girl Friends & GK, MS Sharkey, this was a very interesting blog. I have never seen chickens before and find your photos very interesting. I learned something new again today. Won't be able to see Martha's 'Chicken Show' until 2AM and probably won't be able to stay awake until then. Guess I will have to wait to see it on Martha's website next week when my Mom watches it. Have a Happy Easter there at the farm. Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • OK I watched the chicken show and all my mom talked about was how she wants to get chickens. I thought we squashed that idea but now she is all excited again about chickens.

Oh and when is the next bulldog show??? Everyone in the audience brought chickens I want to come to another show. I was there at 6 months old and now that I'm all grown and sophisticated I'd like to come back.

F & S don't you have any pull in the show themes?

    Zoe

  • I also love the French Bulldog.. I have a female her name is Kikko..she follows me around and I just love her.. she is a sweet dog who snores a lot!!
