Check Out What's Growing in the Cold House

Posted by Sharkey

In our ever-present quest for adventure, Franny and I wandered over to the cold house, where vegetables are planted right in the very fertile ground.  It's always interesting to see what is growing there and sometimes I wish that I could actually eat the stuff.  However, I am told that people are people and dogs are dogs.  And, thank goodness, dinner is served right on time!

Franny, we haven't been inside the cold house is quite awhile. Let's go in and see what's growing.

Oh look! Lettuce! Don't you love how all of the beds are labeled so nicely?

Allstar Gourmet Mix is sure gorgeous. There are so many colors and textures of lettuce.

We should probably get a basket and pick some. We could make Martha a really healthy salad.

Sharkey, things really do grow well here in the cold house. Here's a beautiful row of leafy spinach on one side and lots of feathery carrots on the other.

Isn't this Ruby Chard amazing? Franny, did you know that chard is a member of the beet family and rather than forming a bulbous root, it sends up edible stalks and leaves, instead.

Sharkey, have you ever thought of becoming a vegetarian? You know so much about the subject.

Aachoo! These carrot greens tickled my nose.

Speaking of noses - you should have a whiff of these bunching onions. Powerful stuff!

Oh, and Franny - I like knowing about all kinds of food, but I'm really a carnivore at heart. What's that I hear - the dinner bell?

  • Good Morning F & S
My mom has a garden just like that, we have all kinds of lettuces growing and lots of swiss chard. I'm not allowed in the garden because I like to chew on everything, I like the taste of lettuce but like the two of you prefer some meat with my meals.

She has her herbs all growing in pots on our deck, they look so pretty and mom likes to keep them close because she is always out cutting fresh while she is cooking. Us dogs got in some trouble this weekend, we like to eat the dirt. Mom uses organic potting soil and boy does that taste good. I dug out the parsley trying to get at the dirt but ran when she came running out the back door so Precious got blammed ( I think she knows it was me because I hurled dirt last night)

Have a nice day I think I'll spend a little time out on the deck today sunning myself.

  • Good Morning Ladies,
Looks like you had a great weekend with lots of exploring. As for becoming a vegetarian, that doesn't much appeal to me. Now I do eat a few veggies like cucumbers, right off the stalk in the garden, but no meat at all---NEVER!!!! My food does contain sweet potatoes Mom says. I like those mixed in with the meat.We are supposed to get rain towards the end of the week, so maybe it will help our seeds we have planted already get growing. Have a great day everyone. We are looking forward to the color show. Take care.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Well the weekend is over and back to normal. Yesterday morning daddy said that I had a wet spot on my back near my tail. That meant only one thing; I was chewing there because it itched. Just after noon, mommy called me for something and I thought it was for a bath. I walked right into the bathroom and stepped into the tub. She wasn’t calling me for a bath at all, but while I was there she gave me one anyway: bummer. Oh well, I feel better and don’t itch anymore. Time for my nap.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Francesca and Sharkey: Look at you two - all gung-ho to be vegetarians. I know I don't like lettuce.

You see, I was at the dinner table last night and I sat by my mom like a good girl and just wimpered a little bit. Soooooo, mom gave me a little piece of what she was eating. Well, it turned out to be a piece of lettuce with nothing on it. It stuck to my tongue and finally I got it out of my mouth. Ugh! How could she do that to me????? It was awful, so I laid down under the table and just stayed there with my hurt feelings look. It didn't do any good because momma and daddy still ate all that green stuff and oh yes, they had shrimp in it too. Double UGH!!!

Hope everyone has a great day. Now for my sunbath and nap. Take care. See ya later. Love, Gracyn.

  • Honestly you two pups are such great sports!!!!

love the textures of the greens, guess that's the artist in me...the carrots especially look lovely, even with you Francesca sitting in the midst.

  • I bet Mommy Martha would absolutely LOVE a salad made by her two extremely talented Frenchies! Where was GK? This little adventure would have been a good opportunity to teach him how many different ways there are to grow food on the farm. Hopefully next time.

Everything looks delicious but don't eat the onions ladies!

  • Hi Girl Friends, How is everyone there at Martha's wonderful farm? You two look great! I just love it when you take us along whenever you visit different areas there on the farm. The cold house is really a neat place. I'm a carnivore like you two, but I love veggies, also. My Mom puts extra veggies in my food every day and it tastes great. Was that huge spinach that Martha showed us on Twitter today growing there in the cold house? It looked fantastic! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+
