Some Signs of Spring

Posted by Francesca

Sharkey and I put our yellow coats on the other day and went outside to explore.  We've been noticing how the days seem to be getting longer and that can only mean that spring is on its way.  We trotted around the farm to see if we could find evidence of this and we weren't disappointed!  Have a look at what we found.

Sharkey, I can't believe what I'm seeing here!

Do you see the snowdrops coming out of the ground?

These beautiful flowers are early bloomers, but they are a sure sign that spring is on its way.

Now here's something that matches our coats!

Francesca, these are the flowers of the witch hazel shrub.

You're right, Sharkey! The bark and leaves of witch hazel are astringent and extracts from it are used in soothing lotions for treating bruises and insect bites. Witch-hazel even helps to shrink and contract blood vessels back to normal size.

And what have we here?

I think the daffodils are pushing through the ground!

You're right, Franny, those are definitely daffodils!

In fact, they seem to be emerging all along the daffodil border.

Even though there are signs of spring, it's still winter. Let's go inside and warm up! My feet are cold!

Isn't it wonderful there are signs of spring popping up everywhere! We have all those little green points starting to pop up in my yard too - it's magical :)

This weekend mom and dad worked in the yard cleaning up all the damaged trees and shrubs from the snow. That white stuff sure did cause a mess. I surpervised from my lounge chair. Mom was kind enough to get me out a cushion so I laid in the sun while they worked.

I love the yellow jackets perfect for spring. When is Martha going to have her products at PetSmart? I'm hoping she provides a better selection of jackets especially for Frenchies.

Well breakfast is waiting I smell bacon :)

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
It’s beginning to look like spring time here in the south too. The trees in the front yard are budding and the plants in the back yard beginning to emerge. The only problem with this is that spring time here only last for a very short while, then it turns hot, hotter and then boiling. It also means that we will be leaving for a short visit to the mountains. Mommy and daddy are already talking about getting our RV ready. It’s a lot of work, but it’s well worth it. Don’t worry little GK, I have more than one name too. My name, on my paperwork, is Kirby Bear of Toad Hill. Mommy calls me Kirby, Mama’s Baby, Daddy’s Boy, Fuzzy Butt, Hairball, and when she’s mad at me, Kirby Bear. Daddy calls me Kirby, Kirb, Good Boy, Kirby Bear, and a few other names which I really haven’t understood the real meaning of as of yet. What does “Hair Brain” mean anyway?
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Ladies,
Don't you both look like little Miss Sunshines? Those new bright coats are quite bright and spring like. Yes, we are seeing signs of spring here in Colorado also. The only problem in having an early spring here, is we always get fooled and a late snow and freeze come along and zap everything. I hope not. I didn't get many yummy veggies from the garden last year because of the hail storm. People are still fixing things from that storm. We are supposed to have a rainy/snowy week here. Have a good one everyone.

  • what cute yellow coats, bright as Spring!
We still have about 18" of snow in our yards...just knowing the snowbells and other flowers are under the snow is exciting...every Spring mommie delia goes out in our woodsy garden and says, I didn't know we had these flowers! last year she found Shooting stars as I was playing with one...preew!
She wants one of those Witch Hazel shrubs, maybe she'll get one for her Birthday this week...now if daddie Al would know where to find one...LOL
Rain is coming and maybe this will melt the snow and Spring will spring forward...

  • I love your beautiful yellow Spring coats. They definitely make everything brighter and prettier. Gives me hope that Spring is just around the corner.

Did you two ditch your little brother GK again? Just think, when the weather finally gets warm and all the snow melts away, the three of you will be able to romp all of the farm together.

  • The yellow coats are adorable!

I've been waiting for a Fran & Sharkey Pet Clothing line to emerge.

You certainly are fashion forward gals!

Love the blog and I read it daily.

  • Hi Girl Friends, Sure looks like you were having fun finding all the beautiful signs of spring out there on the farm. While your weather is warming up, our weather here in the Puget Sound area is really cooling down. All of our trees, bushes and bulbs are already blooming and look beautiful. Today we actually got a little snow for the first time all winter and it was freezing cold outside. My Mom had a fire in the woodstove all day and I napped on a rug near it to stay warm. With spring right around the corner, I sure hope we both get much warmer with
pleasant weather real soon. Take care and hug GK for me. Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Well, I concur about the yellow coats - spiffy and pretty, girlfriends! Francesca, thank you for the intelligent and fascinating conversation about witch hazel and its medicinal uses for humans. You are truly a knowledgeable herbal expert, in my humble opinion. Do you use witch hazel for those nagging irritations we canines get between our toes? Is it good for canine acne? What about irritations from flea bites? Bye!

  • Martha, We know you are not just a "do what I say not what I do kind-of lady" and therefore we are still waiting for you to give a forever home to a homeless dog or cat.
How about being a true role model for us.
