G.K. Visits the Chickens

Posted by Francesca

G.K. is a very curious little Chow Chow. He wonders about many things and he asks very good questions. You probably know that Martha likes her eggs really fresh and even raises her own hens. The eggs get collected daily and are delivered to the kitchen and placed in a large bowl. G.K. has been observing this routine and he wanted to know what eggs were so Sharkey and I pointed him in the direction of the chicken coop.

Every day, one of the fellows who works here on the farm brings these things up to the kitchen. They're kind of pretty. I wonder what they are?

There are even these little tiny ones. I've got to find out about these things.

When I asked Francesca and Sharkey what they were, they told me to go and talk to the chickens. I hopped a ride on the Kawasaki.

Chickens don't look too scary. I suppose we could have a conversation.

Hey! You in there! Can you tell me about those oval-shaped things that get sent up to the house every day?

My name is G.K. and I need to learn.

Well hello G.K. I'm one of the hens around here and if you must know, hens lay eggs. I think that's what you're wondering about.

Martha is very proud of the eggs we lay. She tells us that they are very delicious and that they are excellent to bake with. We get treated like royalty here and are happy to lay many, many eggs.

Thank you hen. I'm beginning to understand. If it's OK with you, I'll come back soon for another lesson. Maybe you could enlighten me as to which came first - the chicken or the egg?

I think Mrs. Bosley Chow Chow is in love!

Well all I can say is that Spring can't come soon enough. Mom and Dad say they feel like they live in upstate New York rather than South Jersey. We lost power and lots of trees were down on our property, this snow is not fun. The only good thing is that mom's business was closed for 2 days so she was home with me :)

Well Sophie is home finally we had to delay getting her by a day because they closed the highways due to all the snow. She has 2 really big boo-boo's on her leg. Mom is really scared about the lump they removed because it was only the size of a marble and there is a really big cut. We should have the results of the biopsy in a few days. I said prayers for her last night.

Well I'm going to go check on her, she has to wear this funny collar that looks like a lampshade and she does not like that at all. I think I'll take her a treat.

    Have a nice weekend everyone.

  • Hi there GK: It was really nice of Ms. Hen to talk with you about her eggs. Momma fixes breakfast on the weekends and always gives me a little piece of toast with some egg yolk on it. Yummy for sure!!

Zoe - Hope Sophie gets to feeling better. I bet she would like to snuggle with you for a nice nap and the snacks help too. Momma, Daddy and me will say a prayer for her tonight.

Well, it is finally going to snow here tonight and tomorrow. Momma said 2-4 inches. Just enough for Mom and Dad to take me to my fenced-in backyard where I can run and run and have a bunch of fun with snow. Mom and Dad will throw snow balls at each other and me. We will all have a ton of fun cause that's what families do.

Take care everyone. See ya later. Love, Gracyn.

  • ohhhhh how darling!!! G.K. talking to the hens? and what a beauty to boot! yes, they are treated like Royalty, too bad the hens in the Chicken industry can't have it that good...it makes me sad to think about that.

everyone, have a great weekend at Martha's place..

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Chickens eh, they look like small ducks with short beaks. I’ve seen bird eggs, geese and duck, but not chicken. GK you sure are really getting around these days. You hitched a ride in the Kawasaki; won’t the ladies teach you to drive? Mrs. Bosley Chow Chow please, you’re breaking my heart. I didn’t know you went for the younger set. He’s young enough to be my grandson. Anyway, everyone have a good weekend and Happy Valentines Day to all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Franny, Sharkey and Genghi,
I want all three of you to be my Valentine and thank you for today's blog! I'm still smiling!

  • Do I have to ooh and aah over G.K. again? G.K., G.K., G.K...oh where art thou, my beloved Sharkey? Even the chickens are being treated like coveted company in their classy coop with those regal roosters...so where are you? Be my Valentine!

  • Hi G.K., You are one smart puppy! I love seeing that you are getting so used to Martha's farm by meeting all of the other animals and people who are there. I can tell that all of them are accepting you as a regular member of Martha's family. You are a really special little guy and the more I see you on this blog, the more I would love to meet you and play with you. Maybe some day! I can hope, can't I?!! Happy Valentine's Day to you and all of those around you. Love Dudley Do Right XOXOXOXO+

  • Hi G.K,
Lakota and I think that all the great tours of the farm you, Francesca, and Sharkey have done,it would make a really neat book for children. All those great photos and explanations of what it is like to live on a farm is very educational. We love reading all about it. Cannot wait for the next post.
    Thank you, Laurel and Lakota
