Franny Reads up on Chow Chows

Posted by Francesca

You may know that I had a bit of difficulty accepting our new brother, G.K., into our lives.  Things were great with us, Frenchies, being the keepers of our domain.  I know that Martha really misses Paw Paw and that she really wanted another Chow Chow.  However, the arrival of little Ghenghis Khan was over the top for me.  I've grown a bit softer with time, but I just wanted to know a little more about this very regal breed.  I remembered seeing a book, The World of the Chow Chow by Dr. Samuel Draper and Joan McDonald Brearley, in Martha's library.  I decided to spend some time studying it.  Looking through its pages has given me a whole new insight in how to deal with little G.K.

If I read this book, maybe I'll get a better understanding for G.K.

These Chows sure take dog shows seriously. Way too much grooming, in my opinion.

Oh my! Here's one that looks just like G.K. and he's won a prize!

On second thought, and I hate to admit this, G.K. is cuter. I wonder if that means he'll be a champion?

I can't imagine what it would be like to live in this house of Chows.

Do you think that they are all related? And how would a Frenchie survive there?

It says here that Chows are an ancient breed of northern Chinese origin. This breed was used for protection of the home. I guess we'll be extra safe with G.K. around. That's a plus!

This guy looks really serious - it just seems to me that G.K. has a lot of catching up to do.

This handsome dude reminds me of Paw Paw. I really loved Paw Paw - he was so patient and kind when I was a puppy. I suppose I should cut some slack with G.K.

Oh good! Here's a chapter on Socializing the Chow Chow. I bet I can learn some useful tips here on good training techniques for little G.K. There's something to be said for 'nipping it in the bud!'

  • Happy Belated (by one day) 5th Birthday Sharkey!!!!! Did you have a party with Franny, GK, and MommyMartha? Saw from her tweets that she left for South Africa for a conference so I hope you got to celebrate before she left.

I knew you'd eventually come around Franny. You're such a smart girl to read up the Chow Chow. Now you can take your new found Chow knowledge and help guide GK along properly.

Have a great weekend everyone!

  • Dear Francesca, I truly hope, for your peace of mind and harmony in the whole household, that you learn to love and accept GK with all your doggy heart.

  • Well Franny I'm glad you are starting to warm up to your brother, I think I would have had the same issues. It appears he is there to stay so make the best of it, I'm sure your moma has enough love for all of you. Maybe you should leave a book for G.K. to read so he can understand us Frenchies, we can be a bit moody at times.

Mom finally got the results of my sister Sophies biopsy, not good it was cancer. The Doctor feels they got it all, told mom they got good margins. She is seeing the Doctor on Monday when Sophie gets her staples & stitches out so she'll get more details then. Mom was really sad so I had to give her lots of kisses to make her laugh. She likes when I give her a kiss and snort little "snotzes" with it - wet kisses :) Then when I see her laughing I keep doing it - I sure do love my moma.

On a good note Sophie is starting to walk on her leg with the boo-boo. She told me it's still a little sore but it's not hurting as much. I'm being really good but T-Bone keeps barking at her with her funny lampshade on, it's driving dad nuts - T-Bone loves to bark.

Thank God it's Friday, mom will be home all weekend and there is no snow in the forecast.

F & S do you think we'll ever see the green grass again?

    Have a nice weekend everyone.

    Zoe

  • Hello Ladies,
I can't believe it that you are 5 now Sharkey. You don't look a day over 2. It is snowing here today. Really beautiful!! As long as I have a place to do you know what and not get too wet, I am happy. I knew in time Franny would warm up to the little fluff ball. He is soooo cute, you can't help but love him. And you are correct, Franny, Paw Paw was very patient when you girls arrived. Of course Mama Martha has lots of love to go around. But can't you see him at Christmas this year. He will be grounded from alot of areas I bet. Everyone have a great weekend.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Franny, are Frenchies adept speed readers, too? You whipped through that book about Chow Chows in record time! I'm impressed! Don't worry about G.K. taking over the house; remember, there are TWO Frenchies versus ONE Chow Chow, and there's strength in numbers!
    Bye!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Chow Chows, now you’re talking! We’re loveable, easy to train, adorable, quiet, excellent guards, loyal, curious, brave, ***that’s enough Kirby(daddy)***. We also like other animals and want to just be their friends. It’s good that you are getting along with GK better now Franny. I mean, after all it’s not his fault that he has come to live with you. Someone brought him there. That’s the one you should be displeased with if you don’t want GK there. I think you see my point. Have a good weekend and don’t get too deep in the snow.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good thing you are educating yourself about Chow Chows and GK's Heritage...it is interesting indeed.

I was showing my friend in Africa the pictures of GK, she had Chows at one time..she said did you know this information about these dogs?

In China they call the breed Songshi Quan, which translates literally to "Puffy-Lion-Dog" In other possible origins for the name besides the Chinese word "chou" meaning "edible" is the Chinese word "Kou" meaning "dog" there has been a controversy claiming the dogs were used for human food consumption...but she didn't know if that was a fact. She mentioned other names for the breed... Hei She-t'ou(black tongued) Lang Kou(wolf dog) Hsiung Kou(bear dog) or Kwantung Kou(dog of Canton).

But then Francesca you might have read that in the book..
    have a great week-end everyone!

  • Hi Sweeties,
Franny, I'm really happy that you are interested and caring enough to want to read up on Chows. You watch, one of these days you and G.K. are going to be the best of friends, just like you and Sharkey were with Paw Paw. Did you know that many of your momma's followers miss Paw Paw too? He pulled at all of our heartstrings just like you and Sharkey do and yes, G.K. does too. Play nice and be glad you don't have to go through all that grooming G.K. has to endure. That's one good thing, eh?

  • We're glad the newest addition is settling in but hope this blog goes back soon to focusing on the sweet Frenchies! We love to read about their adventures! Maybe when GK is older he can get a page of his own.

  • Hi Girl Friends, MS. Franny you are becoming smarter and smarter every day. It is so nice to see that you are taking the time to learn more and more about your new brother, GK. He is so precious and is getting more and more like his great-grandfather, Paw Paw. I know you and Sharkey will appreciate him even more as time goes by. I love all three of you and love hearing everything about you all the time. Love Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Franniebrindle, I really applaud you for trying to be a better sister to little GK - in wanting to learn more about him to help you understand him more. I can't EVEN imagine how tough it is on BOTH you girls with this busy, boisterous, and rambunctious little furry ball of badness constantly nagging at you as playful puppies do... I and little Mandy's daddy've been talking about getting another little kittiekittie of which ALL of us could benefit, but we (well, I) don't want to seemingly crush our little Mandy girl in openly sharing our love with another little (we're afraid - competitor!) feline friend. Mandy became such a comfort for mommie when little Edgar passed away, that she (I) has (have) to think about the future and 'succession planning'.

I am assured that we'll know when the time is right, but in the meantime, Franniebrindle - Sharkeybarkey, too - just take things a day at a time with little GK. As springtime blossoms and y'all can get outside and play more on God's green earth, I'm SURE you'll become the bestest friends ever! As with most things in our mommies'-n-daddies' and the fluffiewuffies' lives, in general, it just takes time!

    =^..^=
