Ebony and Ivory

Sharkey and I have been writing this blog for 48 weeks and in all that time, I don't think we mentioned that we are excellent pianists.  Did you even know that Martha has a piano?  We, of course, have a strong preference for French composers.  The other day, G.K. was entirely too rambunctious and I really needed a break from all of his running around.  We made the escape and wandered over to the summer house to play the magnificent Steinway grand piano.  I wish you could hear how amazingly great we sounded.

There's Martha's beautiful Steinway grand piano, just screaming to be played.

Steinway & Sons was founded in New York in 1853 by Henry Englehard Steinway. He was a German cabinetmaker and musical instrument builder and he taught his sons his craft.

Sharkey, did you know that each Steinway piano is made up of over 12,000 parts?

Franny, please relax while I play a little Erik Satie, a French composer, of course. This is called the Gymnopédies - published in Paris in 1888.

These three piano compositions are gentle yet somewhat eccentric.

Do you notice the deliberate, but mild, dissonances against the harmony?

Sharkey, you've really mastered the Satie. Allow me to help with the damper pedals.

Thank you, Sharkey, for that brilliant performance! Now let me play one for you.

In keeping with the French theme, please enjoy Clair de lune from Suite Bergamasque by Debussy, written at the turn of the twentieth century.

Debussy is among the most important of all French composers. This piece just sends me.

And now - one piano, four paws - Let's both play Maurice Ravel's, Ma mere l'oye - Mother Goose Suite. We should round up the geese to enjoy this one, although Martha might not like them in the house.

  • Good Morning Girls

I'm just so amazed at your many talents, I didn't know you both played the piano. I bet whoever took those pictures made sure your paws were clean as a whistle before touching those keys or Moma Martha wouldn't have been too happy. That looks like a very expensive piano and it sure is beautful.

Why do you have a summer house? Do you move in there during the summer? I'll have to ask mom why we don't have a summer house we have a house in the back woods but she calls it a shed. Maybe that is our summer house and I just don't know it. I have a great idea - move G.K. into the summer house with the cats - call it Hair Ball House or Fluff Mansion. I bet G.K. would love to chew on the legs of that nice shiney piano :)

Well we have another foot of snow on the way. I'm telling mom this morning we need to go shopping. I want boots and goggles. My paws freeze in this crap and the snow flakes bother my beautiful bulging eyes. I wish she was older so we could go retire someplace warm. Dad is ready it's mom we're waiting on.

Sophie is having her operation today. Mom's a mess worrying. She is suppose to come home tomorrow but might have to stay an extra day because of the storm, her hospital is far away. We all miss her and are praying her surgery goes well.

Well I'm going to go cause some trouble, T-Bone is taking a nice nap I think I'll go chew his tail :)

  • Hi Francesca and Sharkey: WOW! You two are really talented. My mom won't let me near her keyboard. If fact it has been some years since she played her keyboard. She told me she forgot how. I know she would like to learn to play Clair De Lune.

Zoe - I am sure Sophie will be all right. She has great doctors (I am sure) and they will fix her up all right again. Just like knew. Help your momma through this tough day. Give her plenty of juicy kisses and my momma said for you to be a good girl.

Well, it is freezing here on the East Coast of NC. Then it's going to rain all afternoon and maybe a little snow. Time for a nap. Well, take care. See ya later. Love, Gracyn.

  • Les filles très agréables ! honestly you are amazingly clever for two sweet pups...I had no idea that this talent was hiding...love the photo's.

Mommie delia wished she had a Steinway, she loves classical music, and of course I would love running my white paws over the keys just to hear what comes out...mommie said this morning, "Steinway war ein deutsches Genie und gemachte wunderbare Klaviere"
her German is getting rusty, however since working on a new webpage/lens one being "her life in a suitcase" she came across old German papers/photos giving her a refresher course in the language, check out all the old photos...click on delia's name.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
You two are really something with your talents. I was amazed at how much you know about music. I don’t play the piano, but if I did my daddy said, that Chow’s being from China, I most likely would go for something like “Chopsticks”. I’ll bet that GK can really be a “paw” full at times. I would tell you to “chill” out but I see you already have by being out in the snow without your sweaters on.
I’ll put my paws together for Sophie and say a few words.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • WHOOPS! I meant to say that Sophie will be just like new - not knew. Sorrrrrry. Love, Gracyn.

It's me again Zoe. Too bad I can't work the video camera I could of won $$ for the funniest video. I snuck out the front door while dad was picking up the newspaper and thought I'd take a jog. Dad was chasing me in his robe and slippers!! We live on a cul-de-sac and I thought it would be best to run up the middle of the road. I'll tell ya, it was not a pretty sight him chasing me.

Well needless to say I'm off to crate time :(

  • Francesca and Sharkey I can tell you two make tres belle musique together! Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Wouldn't it be sweet if you two performed a wonderful recital for MommyMartha?

Your little brother GK certainly does sound like a paw-ful. Might as well put all that snow to good use and let the little guy romp his little heart. Right before bedtime. He'll be fast asleep in no time.

  • Hi Girl Friends, I had no idea that you two could play the piano!! I sure would love to have been there to listen to everything that you were playing! Seeing your faces, I could really tell you were having fun. Maybe next time you can invite GK to join you and teach him how to play the piano. Just a thought. Take care and have fun. Love, Dudley Do RightXOXOXO
