We found a fuzzy little thing

Posted by Sharkey

You know how curious Francesca and I are about all things. Recently, we found ourselves pondering a little creature called a woolly bear caterpillar. We heard somewhere that these fuzzy things can actually predict the weather. Imagine that! Maybe they can find employment with the Weather Channel!

Hey Franny - Come over here, I want to show you something.

I think this is a woolly bear caterpillar!

You're right, Sharkey. These fuzzy creatures have the reputation of being able to forecast the coming winter weather.

Let's count - according to The Farmer's Almanac, these caterpillars are supposed to have 13 distinct segments of black and reddish-brown.

Yup - I count 13 - so it must be a woolly bear!

I remember reading that if the middle brown section is wide, then it will be a mild winter, and if the brown band is narrow, then the winter will be harsh.

Let me have a closer look, Franny.

How are we supposed to tell anything when this guy is all curled up?

Oh you silly dogs - go away and leave me be. Besides, why would you care how harsh the winter might be, when you have such a fine wardrobe to keep you warm? I've seen you out and about on the farm in all your finery!

  • Good Morning F & S and all my blogger friends

I'm back :) Nothing was wrong, not to worry, Mom went to Aruba for 10 days and left us dogs at home with Dad. She goes every year with her mom and sister. Dad doesn't like the beach so he stays home with us. That's just fine by me because if he goes we get Supper Nanny moving in to take care of us. Dad won't type so I can't blog in the mornings. I wish my mom would take me I hate the cold and boy was it cold while she was gone. I got in trouble one night because it was too cold and I didn't want to go out before bed so when Dad picked me up I tried to bite him. He was really mad but got over it pretty fast, I gave him lots of kisses afterwards.

That little fur ball lived to tell a story? I would have chewed him up or played with it. Speaking of chewing have you ever chewed the lights on the bottom of your Christmas Tree? I do it every year and it doesn't even hurt. Mom gets really pissed because by Christmas the bottom half of the 2 trees are dark. I don't know why I do it. She put packages around the bottom of the trees trying to keep me out so I chew the bows off then walk on the boxes to get to the tree. LOL Christmas is so much fun.

    11 days till Christmas :)

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I hope your weekend was better than mine was. It rained everyday and still is raining. Didn’t get my walks in and it is beginning to look as if I won’t walk again today. Expecting some thunderstorms so I’ll keep my ears opened so I will be able to tell when one is near; hate those things. I don’t know if the woolly bear can tell what the weather is going to be or not. I do know one thing, if he were around here he most likely would drown with all this rain. Oh well, Christmas is on the way; the tree went up so can sleep under it. Mommy and daddy are so nice to do this just for me.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Ladies,
Where does that little wooly guy go when it starts to snow? I bet when it gets too cold he doesn't go out much and then it is back to the weather people. It is warmer here now. No longer in the single digits. I love laying in front of the fire and looking at the Christmas tree. It was a busy weekend for Tasha and me. Lots of cookies were baked. Today we must rest to get caught up. Have a great day.
    LOve & licks,
    Basil

  • ahhhh what an adorable woolly fuzzy!I as a cat would love to play it to death, however mommie delia will not let me kill anything like this...from what I understand mommie changed when she moved to Missouri, there she would destroy the caterpillars thinking they would destroy things and get into the horses hay, well she found out she destroyed beautiful butterflies, she was very sad, she then found that her farm had a special place for Monarchs, they came by the "thousands" to rest in a tree on their way to Mexico.
Mommie delia says, she can predict the weather better then the weather man just on how her bones feel..he he..sounds funny, but true. I have been outside again since we had a heat wave over 20 degrees.Go see the new posted photos of me "feral Kitty" helping with decorating the Xmas tree.

  • Good morning Francesca and Sharkey: WOW! What a funny looking little bug. He looks all warm and fuzzy. I have not seen one yet, so I'll ask mom if she can find me one to look at and sniff. I hope he doesn't bite. Knowing mom though, she wouldn't let me get to close for fear that I would eat him. But I don't think I would.

I'm pretty sure I saw some Christmas presents for me, but I'm not sure. Mom and dad keep them hidden in the Secret Grandpa Room. That door is always shut. Momma told me that Christmas is almost here and I will just have to be patient. I really try real hard to be patient, whatever that means.

It was a real blah day yesterday. It rained and rained and I didn't get my sunbath. What a bummer! Sooooo, I just took a lot of naps. Daddy walked me through the neighborhood between storms.

Well, it's time for a little snack and my mid-morning nap. Take care Francesca and Sharkey and don't eat the Wooley Worm. See ya later. Love, Gracyn.

  • Gee, Mr. Wooly Caterpillar is a sore head.

I think he is jealous of your winter finery

    :)

  • Hi Girl Friends, I sure wish I had seen a woolly bear caterpillar before we had our terribly freezing cold time all last week. Maybe he could have warned us that it was going to happen. It never did get above freezing all week and the coldest it got was 16 degrees on the night of December 10th. Today it got up to 43 degrees!! Next week, we are supposed to get sunshine. Well, you two sweethearts stay warm and dry!! Love Dudley Do Right xoxo

  • Well, if Woolly Bear happens to JOIN The Weather Channel, he would be a finefine accompaniment to some of my daily favorites, like Stephanie Abrams and Mike Bettes in the mornings, or Jim Cantore and Alexandra Steele in the evenings. Woolly could go out in the field with Jim - hey, or Mike Seidel! - then they wouldn't get lonely when they travel and are away from home.

You two are so clever!...I think you're on to something!

    =^..^=
