Helping operate heavy machinery

Posted by Francesca

We heard Martha talking to Mike, the property manager, about when the tub grinder was going to arrive, and then finally, we heard that it was here.  A tub grinder is an enormous machine that grinds up branches and logs and of course, we just had to take a look.  We took the Kawasaki back to the compost yard, where we met Dan, working his excavator.  He was moving piles around, getting them ready for the tub grinder and, of course, we wanted to help.

Franny and I always like being in on the action and here we are in the cab of the big excavating machine.

Hey Dan, is this the joystick that controls the claw?

Oh, I see - depending on how I move these levers, the machine will go forward or backward.

Wow! I'm really getting the hang of this now!

Very good, Sharkey! You are handling this thing with great precision!

Egads! Look at the size of these tire tracks. There must be another big machine around here.

You're right, Franny. Those tracks were probably made by that huge tub grinder over there. That's what grinds up all the wood.

You go on, Sharkey - I think I'll stay right here.

Well look at that English bulldog logo! That must mean this is a Mack Truck. Pretty cool, but I think they should have used a French bulldog, instead.

You know, Franny, it's always an adventure learning about new things, but from what I recall, this tub grinder makes a lot of noise and I don't think we want to be here when it's operating.

That tub grinder looks scary. I wouldn't want to fall into that thing while it's operating - OUCH!!
I bet there are lots of critters hiding in those wood piles - did you get to check it out?

I'm happy the weekend is here and we're expecting rain - AGAIN. That means Saturday mom will be in the kitchen cooking and baking which is fine by me. I get to spend lots of time with her plus she always give me a taste of what she is making.

I'm hoping these contractors are gone by tomorrow, I'm not getting my beauty rest, too much going on at the house.

Well have a nice weekend everyone. Oh and only 41 days till Christmas :) I have to get started on my letter to Santa I can't wait to see what he brings me.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I just love looking at big machines such as that tub grinder. I’ll bet that it does make a lot of noise when grinding those trees. While in Alaska, I saw a machine called a “dredge” which was used for gold mining. It was old and hadn’t been used in years. It was as big as a house; in fact it looked like an apartment building. They said that when it was operating, one could hear it from three miles away. I was glad that it wasn’t still in operation because that surely would have hurt my ears. Have a good weekend you two.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Whoa...that tub grinder is a big piece of machinery!!
Sharkey I got nervous just seeing you climp up to take a look...what a brave pup! Oh, and then you playing around with that joy stick while Franny on the ground??!! guess I'm a whimp, I'd be running into the woods just hearing all that noise...but then I'm a cat...meeeeauw from Kitty...
Have a safe Friday the 13th!

  • Hello Ladies,
I was starting to get scared, you girls were getting so close to those machines. They look very powerful. Dad just left for work and called right away and said for Tasha and I to stay in for awhile as that mean and hungry coyote was out close by looking for breakfast. I'd like to see him get scared by that big machine and not scare or try to eat us. We are supposed to get a little snow this weekend. Yeah!!! A nice fire will get going. I love it. Have a great weekend all.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Franny and Sharkey, I'm glad you're mechanically- inclined industrial denizens and not swimsuit models! It's nice to see females of any species who aren't shy about operating heavy machinery and who allow themselves to express their mechanical inclinations. You are truly liberated Frenchies! A Frenchie without a forklift is a day without kibbles and bits! Bye...

  • Hi Girl Friends, Wow, how exciting to see such an interesting machine to grind up the logs to make more super compost for Martha's gardens. It sure looks like you two were having fun finding out what that tub grinder was going to do to the wood. You two sure have fun checking out all of the activities that go on on your fabulous farm. What's next?! Can't wait to see! Love, Dudley Do Right. xoxo

  • Well, it looks like you had quite an adventure with the compost pile, just stay away from the grinder please! I am being babysat by my "G&P",aka (Grammi and Papa) these past few days, and boy do me and my sissy "Ruby"(boston terrier) and Sniffy(rescued shar pei)Ted the rescue cat, Olive, the fat cat, Picnic, the beauteous cat, Martini, also a handsome young cat, having a blast, putting them both through their paces. LOL! They love us so much, and we love them too! My parents are coming home today, so this will be the end of the treats and goodies until they come take care of us again....it is always an adventure....
    talk again soon,
    Scout Raiche
