Feeding the birds

Posted by Sharkey

A lot of things are changing at the farm along with the season.  For example, I discovered a long line of shiny barrels in the carport and I just had to know what they were for.  I finally got Francesca interested in having a look and of course, we wanted to get in on the action. We later found out that the bird seed in the shiny barrels was brought over by a nice man named Jim Nordgren from the Bedford Audubon Society - we even heard that he was going to be on Martha's show today!

Francesca! Come into the carport and see all of these shiny new pails.

Honestly Franny! Stop scratching your back and come over here!

Oh, I see. These pails must be where all the wild bird food is stored. Martha likes to feed her feathered friends during the cold months.

Maybe we could help by filling some of the bird feeders.

I don't know - this scoop is kind of heavy.

Sharkey, I can't even reach this scoop. It's so far down. I think we're going to need some help.

Oh Gyurme - you make filling the feeders look so easy.

This looks like really good quality bird seed. There are so many large seeds and assorted nuts.

It even smells good. Gyurme, have you ever been tempted to eat the bird seed? Oh, I remember - you prefer cupcakes! Ha-ha!

Well Franny - another job well done. All the feeders are hanging and awaiting bird customers. And do you remember what also is attracted to bird seed? SQUIRRELS!!!!

Love the new red coats will they be availabe at PetSmart soon?

Ah yes feeding the birds. Oh and AH YES here come the squirrels :) My brother the Black Lab caught one last winter, much fun. Mom didn't think so because it was not a pretty sight. I tried to tell her it comes with the territory. Living in the woods = hunting. Just stay away from the skunks.

Hey, have you ever tried eating the bird seed? Mom puts a shelled sunflower seed in one of the feeders and I must say it is very good. Makes for a nice afternoon snack.

So when will we see Martha's pet products at PetSmart? You know Christmas is coming and I have to make my list for Santa. I might tell him to stop there and shop.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I just love it when mommy feeds the birds. She has this one feeder on the back porch which the squirrels get into every day. It’s my job to keep then our. I love my work, keeps those squirrels on the move. I often nap in the sun almost under the feeder. That keeps them away and the birds don’t mind at all. Some of the birds will sit around the porch and make noise when the feeder is empty. They hardly even move when mom comes to fill it. Just as soon as the school traffic slows down, I get to take a walk.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Ladies,
Those new red coats are fabulous little darlings. You both look so helpful and organizing this morning. Feeding the birds is fun, except for the empty shells that fall under the feeders. Don't eat those, they give you a tummy ache. I know from experience. Well, off to breakfast--I hear those pans a calling.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • I agree - the red coats are HOT. But then, you girls always sizzle! Don't try the bird food...it tastes AWFUL (there's a reason why dogs rule...who would eat that stuff)? I must go try on my powder puff blue winter coat - I'm wondering if I've put on too much weight to fit into it. Mom keeps saying the word "diet" in my direction, and I think it pertains to my rotund belly. As long as the word "diet" doesn't involve bird food, I'm relatively o.k., I guess. Bye!

  • Sharkey that photo of you watching Gyurme is adorable! both of you pups look adorable in those red coats...what lucky birds you have with all those good seeds...when I first came here to mommie delia's, I ate all the bird seeds cause I was so hungry, I'm glad I get good food now, but the birds don't come here anymore cause I took over the area...wish they would for mommie, she loves birds, but guess she loves me more...meeuw

  • Hello Friends,

The red coats are fabulous girls! It is so nice that you two dress so lovely when you go to feed the birds. I am of the mindset that it is always important to put your best face forward.

  • Hi Francesca and Sharkey: I want a red coat too! Yes I do! Yes I do! Just love the red color. When is it coming to PetSmart? I have never tasted bird seed, but it looks kind of good. Oh, I better not try it cause Momma will be aggravated with me especially if I throw it up. How awful that is.

Well, it's kinda blustery and cold today. No rain though and that's good. Hey Mandy, where have you been lately?

Have to go now and tell mom about what I want from Santa Paws this year. The first thing I want is.......a red coat like Sharkey is wearing. Take care everybody. See ya later. Love, Gracyn.

  • I, too, girls, utilize a galvanized trash can like mommieMartha's that I keep my birdseed in. See, the metal helps to keep meeces and such OUT of the birdseed, as they can chew thru plastic in no time flat.

Well, would you believe that Mr. Squirreliewhirrelie lifted the lid on mine and got into my seed?! Believe it - I kid you not! I even used a thick, rubber bungee after that episode - one so thick and strong, that I quivered to stretch it up thru the lid's handle to attach it to the side of the can! I was really proud of myself (as I SHOULD be - this would be THE solution of the century!), thinking, haaaaa, I've outsmarted that furry little ball of badness. Well, guess what, girls?! He outsmarted me! The next night, I went up to my garden shed with my chest stuck out, all full of pride, and when I opened the door, I could not believe my eyes! He had chewed thru the thick rubber with it laying in two, and there was the heavy metal lid OFF the can! He partook of the bestest buffet in the whole wide world!

This shows ta go ya', that these fluffie-tailed furriefritters usually have the last laugh!

    Oh, the humanity!

    =^..^=

  • Hi Girl Friends, How cool that you have so many beautiful birds on your farm. Those beautiful silver containers of bird food sure did look great and I'm sure the birds will enjoy eating those seeds. We used to feed the birds a while ago until too many squirrels came to eat their food. Now we just enjoy all of the birds that eat the seeds from out plants. I love watching the birds just like my Mom does. Love, Dudley Do Right xoxo

  • Hi Martha,

I was wondering, where did you get Francesca's red jacket worn in this blog post? I absolutely love it and would like to give it to my sister's dog, Oscar, my nephew.

    Best Regards, Thanks,
    Mariel
