What kind of balls are these?

Posted by Francesca

Sharkey and I were outside exploring the other day, when we found some strange things in one of the wooded areas of the garden. At first we thought we found some balls to play with but, as it turned out, that wasn't the case.

Franny, look at this! One of the neighborhood kids must have lost a ball over the stone wall!

But wait - it doesn't smell like a ball at all. It kind of smells like a mushroom.

Here's another one, Sharkey! And this one has a funny shape.

Oh my - do you think these are hail stones?

Now I remember. Last year Martha found these things right here in this very same place. She said they were a fungi called 'puffballs.' I guess they like growing here. She also said that when they dry up, if you kick them, they let out a cloud of spores. We should let them dry and try it.

  • Hi Francesca and Sharkey: My momma just said to me the other day that it's time for us to run and play in my fenced-in backyard. But, there is only one thing stopping us. It's those silly mushrooms that grow wild. She said that daddy will help to pick them and throw them away so that I don't try and eat any. They are full of poison!

Be careful of those pretty puff balls. Well, I'm going to have a nap until it gets warmer this afternoon. Maybe play with some toys. Too cold to do very much this morning. So take care. See ya later. Love, Gracyn.

  • Good Morning F & S
Zoe here - thank God my mom is back home she was away for 4 days. Super Nanny moved in to take care of the 4 of us ( only kidding Aunt Marnie) She does a good job but doesn't put up with any crap. We had lots of time outs and we're not allowed to sleep in bed when she is here. Last night we were all sprawled out on the king bed - life is good.

Those mushrooms sure are big - what would happen if you bit into one of those suckers??? Can you eat them?

    Zoe

  • Neat-O! Doesn't it seem that Martha has one of everything in the universe? I mean, if you want to see some kind of weird fungus, ask Martha! Is there a mutant vegetable you've heard of but haven't seen? Ask Martha! Martha is Queen of the Natural Universe, and you are her Hench Puppies. You're so lucky!!!! Bye.

  • oh we have those Puffballs in our backyard woods! mommie delia says when she rode her horse through the woods the horses would step on the balls and brown powder like suff would come out...here is some interesting information on them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puffball
being a cat I want to play with them but never have, I just look at them like you two pups..guess that's a good thing.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
It has cooled off around here following a few days of rain. Now that the sun is out and warming everything up, the mushrooms and toadstools are everywhere. I see them in almost everyone’s yard as I take my walk. I saw a really big one the other day and it has died. It now looks as if some really big dog has left a big surprise for someone; just kidding. Now that it’s warming up around here, I’ll bet that those mushrooms will not grow much longer. Just one squirrel to chase and then it’s nap time.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Ladies,
Those mushrooms are almost as big as you. If your allergies and health issues are anything like mine, being a Frenchie as well, you better let Uncle Carlos kick them and stand way back. There is a never ending supply at Martha's of adventures to take. Happy day and have fun.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hello Friends,

Were aliens playing baseball in your backyard while you two were asleep? I've never seen anything like this. I was very worried for your safety, as well as the safety of Martha, until I continued reading and discovered the object in question was one giant type of mushroom.

We sometimes have little mushrooms in our lawn. I don't really bother to get to close to them, though. Generally speaking, I have a fear of the unknown and am in no way adventurous like you ladies. At least I can live vicariously through your exploits hera at The Daily Wag!

    Talk to you tomorrow.

    XO,
    Fisher Jimmy

  • Hi Girl Friends, Those sure are neat puffballs that you found in your garden area. I have never seen any that big in my yard. We have all kinds of mushrooms and once in a while, we find much smaller puffballs. If you step on them, you get a blackish, grey sporelike stuff that comes out. It's not really very cool. I sure like your neat looking jackets, Sure hope I can get some at PetSmart next year, as well as, a new harness. Take care. Love, Dudley Do Right xoxo

  • God Forbid anything ever happens to my Bugsy Malone( chinese pug), ut if it were to happen I would probably get French Bulldogs. They are clean and do not shed and you can practically carry them in your purse. I canry large purses...LOL. I love your show, Martha and I have been watching you since the early 90's.I would get way early back then as you came on so early back then in only 30 minute segments. I am proud to see that you have come so far. I knew you would do so well.
