Beach Combing

Posted by Sharkey

This past weekend, Martha took us back to Skylands, in Maine.  Because of the approaching Hurricane Bill, the weather was a bit rough for a couple of days.  However, that never stops us from going out and exploring nature and we had a great time at the Seal Harbor beach.

Franny, where do you think this rope leads to? I'm not going into the water to find out.

Sharkey, can you believe how much seaweed has washed up on the beach? Martha says it's called kelp.

Hey, little boy. We like to play with trucks. May we play with you?

Over here, Franny - do you think there's a storm coming?

Hmm...we better get to the bottom of this.

Oh look, it's just a gull feather. You know, those gulls are never very friendly unless you feed them.

Oh thanks - I just love muscles on the half shell.

So you like the beach??? I've never had the opportunity to walk on the beach. Most of the beaches in our area don't allow pets, maybe mom can take me after Labor Day - good idea for a road trip. That green stuff looks gross, don't think I'd like that. Mom said a little girl died up your way last weekend due to the storm, very sad. I hope you stayed close to Martha since I see you were not wearing your life vest. One of those big waves could have carried you off to sea.

Basil I'm glad to hear you are feeling better.

  • well I got to say this looks like a fun day! walk on the Beach, the smell of the Ocean, the sand between your paw-toes and all the good things to explore...what a great day for you dear Pups!

  • Hello Ladies,
I just love your adventures. I have never been to the ocean, just lakes here in the mountains of Colorado. My Dad is a big fisherman. That kelp stuff certainly looks weird--kind of like rubber. Do you ever eat it? Of course I am always interested in food, and those mussels on the half shell look inviting also. The way you two like to explore, I think I will call you Franny & Sharkey, Private Investagators. Ha, Ha!! Have a great day.
    Love & licks,

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I just love to explore new territory. I have only been on one beach and I found it to be fun just as long as I stayed out of the hot sand. As for that “Bill” thing, I would steer clear of anything which has a “Bill” associated with it. They tend to be nasty at times. Got to go now. Time for the morning walk.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hey F&S!

Don't you just love to go beach-combing? Me, too!

Mom and I did that same thing as you two, went down to the beach between storms and hunted for all things washed ashore.

Mom was complaining on our drive about all the condominiums. I never really understood what she was talking about. I saw lots of buildings bit what was a 'condominium'? She said she remembers when their were no condominiums on the beach.

Well, we found a few treasures: seaweed, of course, and Mom lugged that stinkin' stuff all the way home and into the garden it went! (I loved the smell but she complained about that, too!) But even before we ever left the beach, I got myself into trouble, as usual...

I was sniffin' around (you know, we dogs gotta do it), and found a very interesting smell attached to an even more interesting thing! It was rubbery, like one of my squeaky toys but seemed to have no life to it whatsoever! I picked it up and ran over to Mom with my new found treasure. She started getting totally grossed out and started yelling about those CONDOMiniums again! How was I to know it was a condominium?

Hope you wore your sunscreen, girls. Hey, but if you fell in the water you could always cry for "KELP!" Ha! Yeah, we saw your mom's blog today. She was holding up that long strip of seaweed. We thought at first she had skinned a snake or something! You know, you never know what she'll do next! Ha!

Anyway, Looks like you had a nice time and I'm glad of that. Nothing like a sandy shore and a coast line of smells, sniffs and otherwise sorted paraphernalia! :)

  • Bpppupmrrrow. Wooks wike you two had wots of fun, expworing da beach-n-all... Mrrreee?...I wouldn't wike da beach. See, us kc's don't wike gittin' our pwecious paws all wet-n-all, 'n mine are sparkwing white 'n cwean besides. Dat ocean water'd make 'em all dirty. • Hi Gala,
Love the beach. I am happy for you that your Mama Martha took you to Maine again and you got to spend some quality time with her and on the beach too. Wow wow and a double woof woof!
    How splendid.

    The photos are very nice.
    Until next time.

  • Hello Friends,

Finally an experience I can share in! The beach is a wonderful way to spend the afternoon, wouldn't you puppies agree? I love the feeling of the sand in my paws and the crashing ocean water around my ankles. I especially love that I can dig huge holes in the sand and Mom doesn't say anything to me about (which is a nice change of pace since Mom is always discussing my garden digging behavior at home).

If you two beautiful doggies ever come to California, I would love to join you in a West coast beach walk!

    XO,
    Fisher Jimmy

  • Hi Girl Friends, I always thought that beach combing had something to do with my Mom combing her hair before we go to the beach. She explained that it meant going through the items on the beach after the waves came in and then went out. I told her I would love to go back to the Des Moines Marina and do some beach combing. Sure would love to have you gals come with us. We could have a wonderful time together! Hope to see you soon! Love, Dudley Do Right x0x0
